Short Description

At Transcend Coffee, we strive to roast and serve the very best specialty coffee in Canada. We travel the world to find exceptional green coffee and roast each coffee differently to highlight the unique flavours and characteristics of the region in which it was grown.

We aim to teach coffee lovers as much as possible about the intricacies, challenges and joys of growing, processing, roasting and brewing great coffee.

We work in four distinct areas in order to bring the very best coffee experience to you.

sourcing
Samples of green coffee are sent to us from all over the world. We roast and blind cup these samples, but more and more we’re finding that the best way to find incredible coffee is not to let the coffee come to us, but for us to go to the coffee.

That’s why several times a year, we travel to origin — the countries where coffee is grown — to meet one-on-one with coffee farmers. To shake their hands, tour their farms and micro mills, eat at their tables, and to get to know them as human beings. It’s the only way for us to discover, connect with and be inspired by the hard-working coffee producers that are as passionate as we are about quality coffee.

We can then buy directly from these wonderful people, and pay them three to five times what they’d receive if they were to sell to larger national mills that treat coffee like a commodity. This is direct trade. Most of our coffee is already direct trade, and our goal is to be 100 per cent direct trade by 2012.

roasting
When we find the rare coffee farmers who take such great care and grow amazing coffee, we do everything we can to roast it in a way that gently coaxes all the complex flavours and nuances out of the bean and into the cup. We’ve roasted some coffees more than 50 different ways in order to discover the perfect roast profile.

serving
Coffee that has been grown, processed and roasted with great care also deserves to be served with great care. Our baristas receive a minimum of 40 hours of intense espresso and latte art training before they are ready to ‘challenge the bar exam’ and earn the right to serve you.

education
We’ve found that the more people learn about coffee and how it’s grown, processed, roasted and brewed, the more they tend to enjoy it. That’s why we’re developed a deep and multi-faceted education program that includes monthly public coffee tastings, private coffee tastings, public education courses, twice monthly podcasts, andregular blog posts.
