Ethical Ocean Seller Criteria


In order to be an approved seller on Ethical Ocean, your company must meet the following two criteria:

I) Sell Legitimate Ethical Products

What Are Ethical Products?

We aim to host the most sought-after ethical products on the market. Sellers uncertain of the ethical claims of their products are encouraged to read our ethical category descriptions to determine if your product fits the criteria listed under the categories found there.

As a Seller, you make ethical claims by:

Selecting the ethical category that applies to your product Justifying how your product meets the ethical criteria listed for that category Listing official certifications that your product has been awarded Providing links to more information that backs up your ethical claims

How Will You Be Held Accountable?

Due to the complexity and subjectivity surrounding ethical standardization, Ethical Ocean has chosen to apply an open source philosophy. This means that it is the role of the Seller to make and justify their ethical claims - showcasing the ethical properties of their products. It is then up to the Buyer, and the Ethical Ocean community, to judge these claims for themselves and shop accordingly.

Members and shoppers of Ethical Ocean hold Sellers accountable to their ethical claims through the following:

The Ethical Rating System The Member Comment System
Members can rate the strength of a product’s ethical claim. This cumulative score will be visible to all Buyers, influencing how your products are viewed by potential Buyers. Ethical Ocean members can post comments on Sellers, products, and ethical claims. These comments serve as a feedback and accountability mechanism for your products.

Will Ethical Ocean Review My Products?

Yes. As a Seller you must agree to the Ethical Ocean Seller Policy, agreeing to only post products that meet our ethical criteria. Ethical Ocean will also review each of the Seller’s products to ensure that they meet our standard for high quality goods, and that their claims are not unrealistic or misleading.

II) Be a Credible Business

What Is A Credible Business?

Ethical Ocean defines a credible business using 3 criteria:

To sell on Ethical Ocean, organizations must have an official business name and/or number in the country in which they are based. All Ethical Ocean Sellers must have a PayPal account. This is how you will be paid for your sales. If you do not already have an account, signing up is quick and easy. We aspire to showcase high quality products. To meet this goal, Sellers must list their products using high-resolution photographs and must include precise and reliable information.
