A note on the designer:

MBY Passementerie is a family run business in the heart of Morocco’s most exotic city: Marrakech. Brothers Mohsine and Abd Samad inherited the business from their father who inherited it from his dad. Originally from Fes, Mohsine and Abd’s grand-father migrated to Marrakech to start a business specialized in making silk rosaries. (Rosaries, or masbaha in Arabic, are widely used in Morocco for religious rituals.)

Rosaries are still the core of the family’s business but Mohsine chose to expand the business to include jewellery, accessories and home décor to diversify the company’s risk. As raw silk became prohibitively expensive, the brothers were forced to switch to polyester silk to remain competitive with foreign imports.

Entering the store is like living a thousand and one nights tale: Jewellery, rosaries and handicrafts in rich hues and intricate designs take you back several centuries. The brothers’ workshop is in the back of their store and at peak times employ up to 50 women.
