About Ethical Ocean

  • Vision

Our purchasing decisions affect our society and the planet.

It’s up to each of us to know what we are buying and why—and how each product we spend our dollars on impacts other people, animals, and the environment.

But that doesn’t mean we have to know everything. We can share our knowledge, and ideas, to help one another choose wisely. That’s what Ethical Ocean is all about.

  • How it works

Presented here is a collection of the most ethical products in North America. Every product on our website must qualify for at least one of our three designations: Good for People, Good for Animals or Good for the Environment. Sellers are thoroughly screened before being allowed to sell on our site.

Each of our product pages includes a story: explaining what the product does, where it comes from, and what the seller is doing to positively impact the globe. You’ll also see third-party certifications, if applicable.

If one of our designations—say, Good for Animals—matters more to you than the other two, you can search just for products that meet that designation. Otherwise, browse though our thousands of offerings and see what sparks your imagination.

While you’re at it, check out through our hundreds of articles and blog entries too. There you’ll find all the information and inspiration you need to live the fullest, funnest—and most ethical—life you can.

  • Ethics

‘Ethics’ can be subjective. Even personal.

At Ethical Ocean, we believe that all decisions leading to a more sustainable, equitable lifestyle are ethical ones, regardless of where your values begin and end.

We also believe that the more informed you are as a consumer, the easier it’ll be to choose products that make that lifestyle possible.

We do our best to present you with the facts about the products available on our site. If you ever find a seller on our pages that you believe is being misrepresented, we want to know about it.

  • Team

    Chad Hamre (CEO)
Chad has been passionate about development his entire life. A former volunteer with development organizations in The Philippines, Zambia and Malawi, he has seen firsthand the effect that purchasing decisions in North America can have on other parts of the world. Chad’s undergraduate degree in Engineering, his M.Sc. in Development Management, and his MBA make him living proof that good business can be ethical business too.

    Brenna Donoghue
Our President of Marketing & Sales, Brenna’s also a green fashion machine—as comfortable in running shoes and eucalyptus track gear as she is in a slinky black dress made of sinfully-equitable eco-fibers. An MBA grad who grabs the attention of Alicia Silverstone and Treehugger, Brenna’s also your go-to gal for all things ethical in wardrobe, health, and home.

    Jonathan Fishbein (Chief Technology Officer)
Jon is anything but your typical CTO. A serial entrepreneur with a hacker’s heart; able to discuss African politics and the latest jQuery release with equal zeal; Jon has also held top management positions in one of Canada’s fastest growing NGOs, Engineers Without Borders. He continues to use his undergraduate and master’s degrees in computer engineering to go against the grain.

    Tony Hancock (President, Operations)
Tony spent most of his mechanical engineering undergraduate days in solar fields and at the top of wind turbine nacelles. He has worked various positions related to sustainability and renewable energy since then, and now devotes his considerable (and sustainable, and renewable) energy to Ethical Ocean. An eight-year vegetarian now-going vegan, Tony is Ethical Ocean’s creative and content director and oversees fulfillment of orders. He’s also been known to do a little programming for the site. How’s that for a renaissance man?

Together, we’re a healthy mix of human development, environmental advocacy, and animal welfare experience. Ethical Ocean also has a great network of supporters, who lend us a hand in a million ways, and who make our cause possible.
